Clint Eastwood is nominated for an achievement in directing Oscar for Letters from Iwo Jima, the follow-up story to Flags Of Our Fathers which was told from the point of view of Marines fighting the Japanese in World War II. |
In Letters From Iwo Jima Clint wanted to continue the tale of the battle, this time from the Japanese soldiers’ experiences. |
“When you start analyzing one story where they were invading the island they didn’t know why everybody was there and they didn’t know why the Japanese were able to withstand such tremendous bombardment from the Navy and the Naval Air Corps. I was fascinated and was wondering who the tactician was on the other side and what their mentality was and what their feelings were. Americans were sent into the South Pacific in the war hoping that they were gonna come back knowing it was gonna be tough sledding. Everybody goes hoping they’re gonna come back and in the case of the Japanese they were told they weren’t coming back.” |
This is Clint’s fourth nomination, two of which he won for Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby last year. Letters From Iwo Jima is also nominated for best motion picture and achievement in sound editing. |
