WILL FERRELL ROCKS ON THE ICE

It’s never been done before and only in the world of Will Ferrell can it be pulled off, two male figure skaters lifting and pirouetting together in Blades of Glory. Will teams up with Napoleon Dynamite star Jon Heder’s Jimmy MacElroy to go for the gold when both are banned from couples skating due to their unsportsmanlike conduct. |
Will talks about why he wanted to get on the ice and play Chazz Michael Michaels who is admittedly patterned after Elvis Stojko, a champion figure skater known for his rock n’ roll personality. |
“You know there’s so much that’s funny about it along with the fact that Chazz is such a fun character to play and kind of the bad boy of skating, so sexy. And I do sexy well plus I get to wear little facial tattoos. Chazz is kind of rock n’ roll to Jimmy’s kind of classical music and he’s all about sex appeal and showmanship where Jimmy is about technique and form. So that kind of sets up that they’re obviously from two separate worlds and that’s what drives the rivalry between them.” |
Getting down the triple lutzes without looking like a complete klutz was a challenge for Will who was taught by skating choreographer Sarah Kawahara. |
“It looks easy but it’s so incredibly hard. Even during filming we’d get frustrated because one part we’d get right and the next part you’d kind of mess up. But the fact that we’re actually on skates and moving around in somewhat of a graceful fashion is pretty much a big accomplishment.” |
Blades of Glory features cameos by professional figure skaters Nancy Kerrigan, Dorothy Hamill and Peggy Fleming. |
