New York is the city that never sleeps. With it’s 24 hour restaurants and clubs, ethnic neighborhoods and multi-cultural happenings, what better location to shoot a movie than the big apple which is why Mayor Bloomberg and Katherine Oliver, the commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Film Theater and Broadcasting presented the city with Made in New York awards for outstanding achievement in the entertainment industry. Oscar winning actress Marcia Gay Harden shot Mona Lisa Smile at Columbia University in the city and Park Slope Brooklyn. |
Tamara Tunie is a triple threat to New York as she plays Dr. Melinda Warner in Law & Order Special Victims Unit which is a rite of passage for many New York actors. She was in the soap opera As The World Turns shot at the CBS Broadcast Center and she was on the great white way. |
“Well I would tell a filmmaker to come here and walk the streets and the minute you do you’re filled with the most incredible energy. It’s like espresso energy and rich and lovely like espresso. And you look around you and you see history in the buildings. You see tradition in the buildings.” |
“New York City is the only place in the world where you can do a daytime drama, do a night time drama and do a Broadway show. This time last year I was doing Julius Caesar with Denzel Washington on Broadway and there’s just no other place in the world where you can do all three of those things simultaneously.” |
The entertainment industry is big business for the city of New York pulling in roughly 5 billion dollars a year employing about 100,000 New Yorkers. New York is home to several television series such as Law & Order, The Sopranos, and Rescue Me. Films that are currently shooting in New York include Spider Man, Music and Lyrics By starring Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant and Pride and Glory starring Edward Norton and Colin Farrell. |
