WATER’S EDGE CAST CELEBRATE OPENING NIGHT
The cast of The Water’s Edge celebrated opening night at Spanky’s BBQ in the heart of Times Square. After 17 years, estranged father Tony Goldwyn returns to reclaim his family and his beloved childhood lake house. Tony faced two challenges for the role. The first was to completely disrobe night after night in front of a live audience, and the second to reconcile as a father himself leaving his children for so long. The still buff actor admits it was the latter that was more challenging. |
Kate Burton who arrived fashionably late to the party plays Goldwyn’s separated wife who has to deal with the shock of his return after so many years. She also shyly admits that it’s hard sometimes to look away when her old friend is standing stark naked right in front of her. |
“I just go with whatever’s happening in the moment. I don’t know. I stay in reasonably good shape. I mean psychologically your body just reacts to the fact that you’re gonna be unclothed in front of a lot of people. I wanted to look like a normal person so I didn’t really get all pumped up, you know.” |
Mamie Gummer and Austin Lysy play the grown children caught up in the drama between Goldwyn and Burton. Like Kate whose father is Richard Burton, Mamie is the daughter of a living legacy Meryl Streep. Mamie who is Meryl’s clone both physically and theatrically says she’s the perfect blend of both her parents and just couldn’t stay away from acting. |
“Well I do but I don’t look because I’m very discreet. I could get a view if I chose to. I do have a little gander occasionally. But I have known Tony since 1980, 81 I’m sorry 25 years. He wrote me a great card tonight saying, ‘Oh I suppose in 25 years we’ll do The Gin Game. So that’s our next project. We’re having a great time. I love him.”rn |
Mamie is hoping to cross over to the big screen next but she doesn’t want to jinx a good theater thing. The Water’s Edge is currently playing at the Second Stage Theater through July 9.rn |
“You know if you met my dad I really look so much like him. I feel I’m very much the two of them. Sometimes I’m like this is really silly, look at me what am I doing? I just love it and I always have. I was gonna do other things and then I just realized that this is the thing that I really wanted to do.” |
