TYPE O NEGATIVE TALKS JAIL AND FAMILY BETRAYAL, WANTED DEATH
Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele is negative on jail, family, and the value of the criminal justice system. |
Type O Negative has released their new album, Dead Again, and it’s the first CD released on SPV Records and the first since vocalist/bassist Peter Steele was released from jail. Peter Steele says ‘Dead Again’ is a very personal album, and he relates to it on many levels. |
Steele, who once wrote a Type O Negative song called “Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity” said he admitted that he was out of control on substances when he battered a man who he caught with his girlfriend. |
“I just went a little bit too out of control I think with substances. I was trying to compensate for my father’s death and being a coward by hiding behind chemicals, and it caught up with me. So, it’s better to learn from my mistakes than from the mistakes of others. At that time I thought I was the son of god. It was glorious! I mean it was the best two years of my life, thinking I was immortal and this and that until my family had to get together and say, ‘Let’s go lasso him and get him.'” |
Dead Again’s song “Tripping A Blind Man” is a diatribe on how the six-foot-eight singer felt when his own family decided what was in his best interest, which turned out to be jail, rehab, and the psychiatric ward. |
“I just feel that certain people who said that they ‘loved me’ took advantage of my situation, and I think that is — may I used the word f–kin’? May I? I think it’s f–kin’ disgusting! I used to have five older sisters — I used to — and now I don’t. It makes me sad. It really… Man, I’m looking into your eyes and it makes me sad. Honestly when family members have you kicked out of your house on Christmas Eve and you’re put in Kings County Hospital G-ward, the f–kin’ nut house, and then you’re sent to Riker’s Island, and then to rehab, because they “love you so much.’ They can look like they care so much, ‘He had to hit rock bottom.’ Who the f–k are you to tell me I had to hit rock bottom! ‘You…’ — half my family are drug addicts — ‘…did I ever interfere with your life?'” |
Steele added that his institutional experiences have just created a bigger monster, and that they should have killed him. |
“The worst thing that the system could have ever done was to send me to jail becuase… What else do you have to do with your time other than speak to other criminals to learn how to rob houses and rob cars and do all this other s–t. That’s the worst thing. Now, I mean, they should have killed me. They have unleashed me upon the world. Big mistake. The worst thing society could have ever done was send me to jail because now I’ve learned to be a better criminal.” |
