Lions for Lambs marks the beginning of hopefully a beautiful relationship between Tom Cruise and United Artists after being ousted by Paramount CEO Sumner Redstone for his strange behavior and negative press surrounding his couch jumping love for Katie Holmes. |
Tom talks about his new association with the studio and what it represents for him. |
“Well I feel very fortunate this first film for UA but I also wanted a picture that was going to define what I believe is the spirit of United Artists which is just that, united artists. So I don’t think there could’ve been a more perfect film for the new United Artists with Robert Redford who is a maverick of cinema. What he’s done has changed and defined modern cinema. If you look at the independent films but he’s also a magnificent storyteller.” |
Tom takes on the role of Senator Jasper Irving, a presidential wannabe who gives journalist Meryl Streep the breaking story of her career involving a recognizance mission to bring the troops home. Tom talks about what attracted him to the role. |
“You can’t fake playing that guy. I had to become that guy and really understand what he knows and what he understands. I read many books. I was fortunate enough to have various people who were open with me and sharing their views at a very high level so I could understand this guy and play this guy from the inside out. When I put it down I wanted to have a discussion. I don’t always feel that way when I read a piece. To have that entertainment value and something that I can walk away and I want to know more about the subject and want to have a dialogue with someone, that’s what interested me.” |
Tom’s next coupling with United Artists is Valkryie as Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg based on the plot to assassinate Hitler. |
