At the time of Prime Minister Tony Blair’s election into office, Queen Elizabeth II had gone through her fair share of dowdy leaders, but Blair was promising modern changes in England starting with a public mourning when Princess Diana died which was against the Queen’s conservative upbringing. Michael Sheen who plays the Prime Minister in The Queen says the goal of the film was to see the Royals as real people and not just figureheads. |
The marriage shown in the film between the Queen and Prince Philip played by James Cromwell was a way of showing they were common folk. |
“Ultimately this is a story about people and they’re human beings just like everybody else. They may be in exceptional circumstances and have very different kinds of lives or a different context to a lot of us but at the end of the day they are absolutely people and you can only relate to a story if you’re being able to empathize and all that kind of stuff.” |
