THE ROOTS UNHAPPY WITH DEF JAM RECORDS

Late last year, the Roots signed with Def Jam Records after recording seven albums for Geffen Records. As part of the deal, the group was slated to receive their own label, Left Jam, and release two albums. The Roots released their Def Jam debut, Game Theory, in August and the set has sold a disappointing 131,000 copies in the six weeks since its release. |
The group’s Black Thought told MTV.com, “I’m critical of Def Jam too and the way it’s run. I’m just trying to fulfill my obligation, work hard and keep it movin’. Sometimes you got too much on your plate: When you should be concentrating, your focus is elsewhere. But I’m no diva about it, you have to be self-sufficient with any label.” |

The Roots owe Def Jam Records one more album under their current deal. |
