THE KILLERS DISCUSS THEIR GROWTH AS SONGWRITERS ON SAMS TOWN
The Killers compare the song writing and recording of their smash debut ‘Hot Fuss’ and the follow up, ‘Sams Town.’ |
The Killers garnered world wide acclaim with ‘Hot Fuss,’ perhaps one of the best debut albums by a Rock band of all time, and with all the success of their first album came the pressures of, “What next?” On ‘Sam’s Town’, The Killers sophomore release, the band looked to silence their critics and not only pick up were their first album left off, but also surpass it. |
We caught up with Drummer Ronnie Vannucci to talk about the band having a lot more freedom and time in the studio during the recording process of ‘Sam’s Town.’ |
“‘Hot Fuss’ was basically a Demo in comparison to ‘Sam’s Town.’ Our largest comparison is we had time to record stuff more than one or two takes. There’s good and bad to that. You capture a lot of spontaneity, Hot Fuss I’m talking about. We never thought they’d be on a record, we always thought these would be songs that would give people a taste of what we got going on and we’d go in and re-record them properly some day. It ended up working for some reason. For ‘Sam’s Town’ we wrote a lot of that on the road and we took two weeks off and got scared that we’d dry up and fade away, so we just got started working on ‘Sam’s Town’ songs. Wrote about 60 songs, widdled that down to 30, widdled that down to 17, recorded those and put twelve on the record.” |
The Killers have just released their latest video off ‘Sam’s Town’ for the song ‘Read My Mind.’ The Killers are up for a Grammy Award once again this years with ‘When You Were Young’ which is up for Best Rock Song and Best Short Form Music Video at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. The show will air February 11th on CBS at 8pm EST. The Killers will next start their world tour Feb. 16th in the UK with dates extending until May 29th in Sacramento. |
