THE GUARDIAN SHIPS OFF TO DVD

The Guardian on DVD features behind-the-scenes features on real life Coast Guard rescues and shows how the actors braved the ocean as well.

The Guardian starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher as rescuers for the U.S. Coast Guard ships off to DVD tomorrow.

Catch a wave with Costner and Kutcher as they perform daring stunts that is usually reserved for the real Coast Guard swimming professionals. Kevin talks about how it felt braving the powerful ocean in the featurette Making Waves.

“Well I think it shows that we don’t just get out of our trailer and go to work and then show up at the premiere. It’s important to us and it’s important to Ashton and myself and Andy created that environment where we could go suffer.”

The DVD includes a never before seen alternate ending which director Andrew Davis said was shot just in case the audience didn’t buy the original ending.

“There was some concern that the ending of The Guardian that Ron Brinkerhoff had written was very powerful emotionally but would the audience feel was too serious. It was too depressing this hero had given his life for Jake. And so we talked about what the alternative ending might be and we went about putting it on paper and wound up shooting it. There was a lot of trepidation that Kevin didn’t want it. I didn’t want it, the producers didn’t want it, the writer didn’t want it. But we wound up shooting it anyway just as a safety valve. You spend two years on a movie; you want to make sure that people are happy with it in the end.”

Making Waves also reveals how the film’s amazing rescue scenes were done, and Unsung Heroes, a program revealing the real Coast Guard heroes and their Hurricane Katrina rescues.
