THE FLAMING LIPS ON THE SPECIALNESS OF XMAS ON EARTH
With the release of their long anticipated movie “Xmas on Mars,” Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips talks about the specialness of Christmas |
After finally releasing their long anticipated movie “Xmas on Mars,” The Flaming Lips will be take some much needed to time away from the road to be at home with their friends and family for the holidays. “Xmas on Mars” tells the story of the first Christmas on a newly colonized Mars and it stars lead vocalist Wayne Coyne, who also produced the movie as well. As fans of The Flaming Lips get a chance to see what Wayne’s vision for the first Christmas on Mars would be like, we wondered what it was around the Coyne house during Christmas growing up. |
Artisan News caught up with Wayne Coyne at the premiere of the bands movie “Xmas on Mars” to get his thoughts on still surrendering to the specialness of Christmas. |
“I’ve been very lucky that these strange concepts of Christmas that I’ve really had even since I was a child, I still do them. We still celebrate Christmas in the biggest way that we can. Luckily a lot of my friends have kids and my brothers and sisters still have a lot of kids around. We still bring Santa Claus in. I don’t know if they really believe it’s Santa Claus but they do exactly what I want them to do. They surrender to the specialness of the moment the way that we all should and say this Santa Claus that’s right here in front of us, even if he’s not real, it’s awesome so let’s party. Hopefully that will always happen.” |
Wayne also talked about Christmas exposing the real magic in the world. |
“You know I understand that we as a family made our Christmas. It wasn’t Jesus and The Bible or those sorts of things. We made this experience for ourselves. So to me Christmas really does expose to us the real magic in the world. The real magic that’s made by people.” |
As of press time the band doesn’t have any shows booked for 2009 although that is likely to change in the near future. The band is also in the process of recording their next album which will be the follow up to “At War With Mystics.” It was also recently announced that The Flaming Lips will be the curator All Tomorrow’s Parties which will take place in New York in Sept of 2009. The Flaming Lips will headline the festival and will be choosing all the bands for the final day of the event. |
