THE DELAY OF TEENAGER THE RIGHT DECISION FOR THE THRILLS
The Thrills talk about wasting time on songwriting on their latest album ‘Teenager’ and why it was the right decision. |
Dublin’s own, The Thrills, who recently released their latest album ‘Teenager’ know that delays in studio recording are sometimes inevitable, but in their case delaying the release of the album was the right decision for the band and the extra time the band spent on songwriting helped in the end. After the success of the bands debut ‘So Much for the City’ which hit #1 in Ireland, the band has wanted to broaden their horizons and write songs that show their growth as musicians. Even though the band had an albums worth of material finished, they decided the songs weren’t exactly right and they decided to start from scratch with a new direction. |
We caught up with lead vocalist Conor Deasy to get his thoughts on what he feels was a waste of time in their initial song writing and why it was the best decision to start again. |
“If a song felt familiar or if it was new ground, I wanted us to chase after it. I just wanted the best songs to make the record and then when it actually came to putting it out last Christmas, there was just a handful of songs that were just a little too cozy. I felt they could’ve been on the first (album) and said ‘No!’ And then we went inside to write more songs. So instead of having a nice Christmas with our feet up in front of the fire it was back to drawing board and we had to write more songs. But those songs we wrote then, songs like ‘The Midnight Choir’ and ‘Restaurant’ and ‘This Year’ I think were songs that really reshaped the record actually. So, it wasn’t an easy decision to make, but it was the right one.” |
So after all the delays did the band get the album they wanted in the end? |
“I think ‘Teenager’ is definitely a departure for us. We spent a long time making it. It was important that we left certain things behind. When we started out we weren’t that stiff. We didn’t have very rigid guidelines and as a result we might have wasted three quarters of a year writing songs that we didn’t end up using but ultimately we got the album we wanted. It just took us a long time.” |
The Thrills will be touring Europe beginning December 1st in Paris. Look for the band to hit such cities as Cologne, Leon, Stockholm, Oslo, Amsterdam and Copenhagen to name a few. The bands European run of tour dates extends until December 16th in Malmo. After the band takes some time off for the holidays, look for a more extensive run of dates to be announced for 2008. |
