STUART SMALLEY BORN FROM AL-ANON MEETING
(VIDEO) Al Franken’s Saturday Night Live character Stuart Smalley was created from Al-Anon meeting. |
Comedian and writer Al Franken’s famous Saturday Night Live character Stuart Smalley was a caring, nurturing member of twelve step programs who doled out advice on the sketch comedy series. Al reveals how his unlicensed therapist whose daily affirmation I’m good enough, I’m smart enough and doggonit people like me was created. |
Franken discovered that the film Stuart Saves His Family starring Smalley is shown at rehab to inspire the addicted. There is one person who Franken would love to cure with Smalley’s philosophies. |
“I go to Al-Anon which is for friends and family members of alcoholics. Going to Al-Anon meetings inspired Stuart. But Stuart was about recovery and that goes into a lot of other different areas of life. I have been very gratified of a lot of therapists come up to me or people working in rehabs.” |
According to Al there will be no Stuart Smalley sequel any time soon. |
“My wet dream is that Rush Limbaugh had to watch Stuart Saves His Family with his wife when he was in rehab.” |
There’s always another book to write and tomorrow Al Franken will be signing copies of his latest book The Truth With Jokes at Border Books in New York City. |
“People come up to me and say when is there gonna be a Stuart sequel and I say you know I found out something about showbusiness. They don’t make sequels when you lose 10 million dollars.” |
