Broadway star Stephen Lynch was nominated for best actor in the musical The Wedding Singer based on the popular film starring Adam Sandler as the jilted wedding singer. While Sandler never received any accolades for his performance in the movie, Stephen says the comedian would be proud of his Tony nod.

Stephen is excited about his nomination but the details of hearing it for the first time still remain a little fuzzy.

“No I think he’d be happy. He helped create this work and now it’s up for best musical and best book and score. I’m sure he’d be proud to have had a part in it. He saw the show in Seattle when we were trying out the show there. He snuck in one night. I don’t know how many people knew but thankfully I didn’t. They didn’t tell me so I came backstage after the show and there he was standing in the hallway and congratulating us all. It was nice to hear that from him.”

The Wedding Singer was nominated for five Tony Awards including best musical, and best original score. The rap song that the grandmother performs in the original film translated perfectly to the stage by Rita Gardner.rnrnrnrn

“I wept and then I wrote in my journal. Basically I spent two hours fielding phone calls from family and friends and colleagues and people congratulating me and wishing me well. I was so tired. I had no sleep because I partied the night before at the MTC gala. So it was all kind of a weird blurry haze.”
