We’ve always depended on happy endings but what if all of a sudden your favorite bedtime stories were in danger of ending unhappily like Rapunzel getting split ends or the seven dwarfs growing seven feet tall. That’s what happens in the animated feature Happily N ‘Ever After when Sigourney Weaver starring as Cinderella’s wicked stepmother Frieda gets hold of the wizard’s magical staff and begins to wreak havoc in Fairy Tale Land. |
Sigourney says it’s refreshing to see our favorite story book characters turned inside out. |
“Oh I think what they’ll love about the film is you’ll see fairytales that you love and you know so well like Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty and you’ll see them sort of turned inside out I think in a very delightful funny way. And it’s kind of very cathartic to see what happens when all the darker figures start running things. They turn out to be very human too. They want to get drunk and sit around and not have to work so hard. Frieda has to really make them get up. She has help problems.” |
Sigourney says she was attracted to Frieda, the evil step mom because of her human qualities. |
“I’ve been offered a lot of scripts where they want me to be the wicked queen and it hasn’t been very interesting to me because they’re just sort of relentlessly irredeemably wicked all the time. In fact I loved the character of Frieda. I could relate to her. It wasn’t that she was just evil or hated Cinderella. She was just bored out of her mind, tired of doing the same story again and again. She has this opportunity to switch things around and have a little power and she goes for it.” |
Happily N’ Ever After also features the voices of Sarah Michelle Gellar as Cinderella and her real life husband Freddie Prinze Jr. as the palace dishwasher her unknown true love who’s kiss restores the kingdom to happily ever after once again. |
