SHOOT ‘EM UP DIRECTOR CREATES WORKING CLASS BOND
Shoot ‘Em Up director Michael Davis created a new Bond-like character for the screen. |
Clive Owen never got his chance to be James Bond but in Shoot ‘Em Up, writer/director Michael Davis has created a character called Mr. Smith for Owen who personifies a working class Bond. |
This blue collar James Bond doesn’t use any gadgets, just good old-fashioned guns and believe it or not, lots of carrots which are used for more than munching. |
“That’s very funny. Actually in the writing process the carrot wasn’t quite as big a deal. Clive says, ‘carrots are good for the eyes. Eyes are good for shooting,’ and therefore he was always having the carrot but as I was making the movie I felt like it was becoming a character. I came up later on, there’s a scene where Clive can’t reach the gun in his back seat so he uses the carrot and threads it through the trigger guard so he can pull the gun in. I just kind of thought it was funny and clever that he has no gadgets. He only has the carrot to help him.” |
Michael describes how Mr. Smith is very different from the character of James Bond. |
“The character in this movie actually goes through a greater transformation than any of the Bond characters. This guy that Clive Owen plays is this damaged guy and in the course of defending this baby from all these gunfighters, he ends up healing himself and so there’s more to play with when you’re creating a new character.” |
Michael hasn’t ruled out the possibility for a Mr. Smith franchise. However he’s currently writing a new action script that he promises will be even wilder and crazier than Shoot ‘Em Up. |
