SEAN ASTIN STEPS UP TO THE PLATE
Sean Astin fulfills his Field of Dreams fantasy in the high school baseball film The Final Season. |
Sean Astin stars in The Final Season, the true story of the Norway Tigers, a small high school baseball team in Iowa with big dreams of winning. When a merger with another high school causes the firing of their head coach Astin, a former girl’s volleyball coach steps up to the plate to do the job. |
Sean says you don’t see movies that focus on the great American past time in high school, and even got to fulfill his Field of Dreams fantasy batting a few. |
“I think the thing that first attracted me to the Final Season was the fact that it was about baseball. I played baseball for 13 years growing up through Little League and then Major Little League in high school and everything so I think I love the movie was treating a story about high school baseball because most of the movies you see about baseball have to do with the pros or they have to do with college baseball or with Little League. The fact that I get to take batting practice in a place like Veterans Memorial Stadium or on the Norway field or any of the other colleges we’ve played at. I feel like the rest is just stealing time.” |
Sean says high school baseball could steal bases from Major League baseball and be just as entertaining. |
“I think high school should give the pros a run for it’s money because this is something that parents come out for and something that families come out to watch and it’s something that most high school kids can do at some level or another if they want to. So to find a team in the middle of rural Iowa, in the middle of pastures and farmland and cornfields, not just a team but a school that has this unfathomable tradition of winning is just worth making a movie about.” |
The Final Season opening Friday, October 12th was shot entirely on location in Norway, Iowa and consulted by the actual players and coaches who were there for the 20th State Championship. |
