Darren Lynn Bousman returns for his second crack at directing the Saw franchise with Saw III which reunites most of the cast and the crew, even the hotel where everyone stayed during production remained the same. What has changed Darren says is Jigsaw’s digs have gotten much more elaborate to accommodate an extra special someone. |
Darren was most impressed by Tobin Bell’s development of Jigsaw keeping a diary of the madman’s life that only helps him to flesh out the character. |
“Jigsaw’s lair has more quite impressively I would say in Saw III. Saw I he had a bachelor pad lair. In Saw II he had more of the one-bedroom type lair. In Saw III he has an entire warehouse. David Hackel has done a fantastic job. I think that Jigsaw needed to expand his lair now that he has a new addition to it, mainly Amanda.” |
The traps in Saw III will no doubt impress the fans, and possibly alienate new viewers with intense and gruesome images such as the twisting crucifix, body chains and ice shower. Darren says they’re psychologically scary as well. |
“You know Jigsaw, Tobin Bell is incredible. He’s got notebook after notebook on character development. What Jigsaw eats for breakfast, what his religious beliefs are. Is he married? Does he have kids? Where he went to high school, what his major was in college. He’s got all of these little things that he’s written out in this book. Shawnee has some character quirks in this movie that if you’re paying attention to it are really really quite interesting.” |
Saw III opens tomorrow in theaters. rn |
“What’s interesting about Saw III this year is the traps aren’t just physical, they’re emotional traps. Everyone is used to seeing these blood, violence, gore traps. Believe me when I say we have a ton of blood and violence but the emotional aspect of the character is what interests me more, about the emotional choices the character must make.” |
