SAMMY HAGAR HONORED BY CABO
Former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar was honored by Las Cabos for his work talking up Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding area. |
Former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar, owner of the Cabo Wabo Cantinas and the tequila that bears its name, was honored by Los Cabos last week, December 5. Mayor Luis Armando Diaz bestowed him with the Distinguished Guests of the Municipality of Los Cabos for his representation of the tropical paradise in speech and in song. |
Hagar first visited in 1981, and he later wrote the hit song “Cabo Wabo” with his then Van Halen mates. The tune put the Mexican destination on the map. Hagar told the Los Cabos audience about a recent conversation he had with a journalist about the area. |
“I said that Los Cabos has changed a lot over the years, but anyone that would come here for the first time tomorrow would fall in love with the place because it’s still a beautiful, beautiful, place.” |
Hagar, who has lived in Los Cabos for the past year, added that he felt a sense of pride for his Mexican home. |
“I think the most important thing for me is that when I go around and promote Cabo, I don’t promote it for my business. Because I never dreamed I’d have a business as successful as it is. What makes it so easy for me to go around the world and talk about what a wonderful place it is, is when those people come here and they have such wonderful hotels and such wonderful restaurants, and the ambience, and wonderful beaches. This place is beautiful. And anyone that I say, ‘Come there,’ and they’re happy when they come here, it makes me feel good. And I’m proud to have everyone support this place in the same manner that I do. God bless you people. Viva Los Cabos.” |
The Red Rocker’s affinity for Cabo and the release of the Van Halen song has led to a world famous nightclub, restaurant, clothing line, tequila and an annual birthday bash for Sammy every October. |
