SA RA MAKES TRANSITION FROM PRODUCERS TO ARTISTS
Sa Ra Creative Partners made a name over the years as a production trio which has crafted hits for Dr. Dre, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Pharoahe Monche, Jurassic 5, Kanye West, Bilal, John Legend, Herbie Hancock, Iggy Pop and others. The group, which is made up of Taz, Om’Mas, and Shafiq, released an independent album titled, The Hollywood Recordings, on Tuesday, April 24th. The album features guest appearances by Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, Capone-N-Noreaga, Bilal, the late J Dilla, Kurupt, and Lord Nez. |
Group member Om’Mas explained why the trio decided to step out into the forefront and become artists. He said, |
“So when we first came together it was more so a producing thing as opposed to an artists based movement as some people would call it. But what started happening actually as we were soliciting our songs to other artists and stuff like that and trying to really just make it as producers essentially. A lot of our peers and a lot of our friends and constituency would be like, ‘Yo these sound like finished songs. They need to just come out like the way they are.’ So that kind of help to drive us to make that switch. But it was kind of subconscious. It was just happening. It was very organic how it happenned.” |
Sa Ra will release their official major label debut, Black Fuzz, later this year. The group was initially signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint but when Sony Records closed their urban division they were able to walk away from the deal. The trio is currently negotiating with several majors to release their official debut. |
