RYAN MURPHY NIPS INTO RUNNING WITH SCISSORS

(VIDEO) Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy writes and directs Running With Scissors.

Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy took on the daunting task of adapting the novel Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs into a screenplay. Most importantly he wanted to be true to the story but had to consolidate the epic tale that spans from 1972 to 1980.

Once Murphy had his script the next move was to find qualified actors to direct the words he’d written, most of them directly from the author’s mouth. The cast featuring Annette Bening, Brian Cox, Joseph Fiennes and Evan Rachel Wood made his job easy.

“I very quickly decided that this is a story of how a boy makes a family. I wrote one word on a note card that I posted by my computer which was the word family so I would reference that idea constantly. Most people go through a period in their lives where they are estranged from their families, where they are angry for things that have happened to them in their childhood. I know I certainly was but you get to a certain point where you can either be consumed by the anger or let it go and forgive them.”

Ryan Murphy continues to direct Oscar winners with his next project Dirty Tricks reuniting him with Running With Scissors stars Annette Bening, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jill Clayburgh plus another Oscar winner Meryl Streep.rn

“A lot of the words in the script are Augusten’s and I felt confident in the story. I felt if everybody just was true and played it very real that it would work and I think that’s what’s happened. And they’re all first class actors with several Academy Awards nominations or actually awards between them so I just loved setting them free with the material and watching them go and see what they did with it and always it was fantastic.”
