REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA IS NOT YOUR PARENTS OPERA

On the set of Repo! The Genetic Opera! in Toronto, Paris Hilton sings her heart out as a plastic surgery junkie hooked on painkilling drugs for the futuristic horror movie musical. Set in the year 2056, a biotech company GeneCo offers designer upgrades for internal organs such as a Gucci liver. |
This is not your parent’s opera is the mantra on the cavernous set warehousing the dusty graveyard where Repo Man played by Buffy and The Vampire Slayer star Anthony Head does his dirty work. More aptly described as a hybrid of The Rocky Horror Picture Show meets Bladerunner, Director Darren Lynn Bousman straight from promoting Saw IV, and Paris say the film magnifies the obsession with surgical enhancement. |
“It’s a reflection of our times. You go outside, you know I’m from L.A. and you walk down Beverly Hills and half of every store is either plastic surgery doctor’s office about augmenting your body. People are always looking for perfection. And that’s kind of what this is, it’s a take on that whether it be working out all the time or changing your appearance. This is a look at what would happen if we kept this up about 50 years from now and what the world would be like. How it is really is out of control with so many people getting it but who knows how crazy it’s gonna be 50 years from now. This movie takes place in the future and it definitely shows that obsession with being perfect.” |
This role could not be more tailor-made for Hilton who lives amongst a world of plastic surgery addicts in Hollywood. Ironically unlike the scalpel slut she plays, Paris has no desire to go under the knife. |
“A lot of girls are really young that are doing it but I think if it makes someone happy that’s fine. I have not and I’m too scared to but I have a lot of friends that have. Paris Hilton is actually 52 but you would never know it by looking at her! If I have like prosthetics. Sometimes I have stitches going across my chest or a prosthetic nose and that can take two hours, three hours. So the make-up part is hard but it’s a lot of fun changing the look every day and every time I look in the mirror I look completely different so I’m having a lot of fun with this character.” |
Rounding out the cast is seasoned opera singer Paul Sorvino, Skinny Puppy’s Kevin Oglivie, and Phantom of the Opera star Sarah Brightman making her movie debut. Repo! The Genetic Opera, a Goth rock opera composed by Terrance Zdunich and Darren Smith is set for release in 2008. |
