REESE WITHERSPOON WORRIES ABOUT RENDITION
Reese Witherspoon realized how serious the practice of rendition was when she made the film and hopes to enlighten audiences. |
The practice of rendition which means handing over a suspected terrorist to another government where they are usually inhumanely tortured is explored in the film Rendition. |
Reese Witherspoon who plays the wife of the suspect remembers reading a story in the newspaper about a political prisoner who suffered immeasurably without even an apology. She was also drawn to the role as a wife and mother. |
“The interesting part of it was to play a character who was married to someone of a religion that isn’t necessarily the largest religion in our country and to experience what it must be like to be married to a Muslim man in our culture especially after 9/11. The way her family was treated, the way he was treated and that’s something and something as extreme as this happening is not altogether unfathomable.” |
Reese didn’t have to look any further than the local television news to become empathetic to what is still happening every day. She says she hopes the film will enlighten people about religious intolerance. |
“Hopefully it will sensitize us a little bit more to the things that are happening in the Middle East and things that are happening here, practices that are going on that not a lot of people know about. That they might be a little upset to figure out. I mean our country was sort of formed on these ideas that religious intolerance is not acceptable and to see that it still is going on after so many years I think it’s important to shine a light on that.” |
Reese is currently shooting the much lighter film Four Christmases with Vince Vaughn about a couple who try to visit both of their divorced parents on Christmas day. |
