RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS CORRECT ABOUT ROCK BEING STALE?
Red Hot Chili Peppers took home four Grammy Awards, but the band said that rock has gotten stale. |
Has rock and roll gone stale? That’s the question that many were asking as rock once again had a poor showing in general categories aside from the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s four trophies. After accepting their awards and asking kids to be up to the challenge of forming rock bands during their acceptance speech, Anthony Kiedis and the boys clarified their statements backstage. |
The Chili Peppers starting with Frusciante, talked about how their call to arms during their acceptance was in response to a stale rock music scene. |
[Frusciante] “I think the genre has gotten kinda stale. As a rule, I think a lot of the more inventive things have been in electronic music that’s more underground and pop music that’s really over the top but rock bands themselves don’t seem to be taking that many chances, but hopefully they will in the future. Hopefully it’s just a phase.” [Kiedis] “My take on it is that he was just trying to create some good will, some positive instigative energy.” [Flea] “He wants to light the fire underneath the children of today.” [Smith] “Exactly, pick up an instrument and play some music.” [Flea] “Yeah, for the sake of the music not for the sake of the money.” |
Red Hot Chili Peppers started in the mid ’80s, but their success came at a time in the early ’90s that many see as the halcyon days of modern rock or Alternative Rock. Meanwhile, the band is one of the charter members for the Save Our Selves (SOS) benefit concert to be held this July. The concert is the Campaign for a Climate in Crisis, and is set to be a Live 8 type of event taking over in several continents. It’s sponsored by MSN, who now owns the production company that put on Live 8 for America Online. |
