PLAIN WHITE Ts HEY THERE DELILAH IS NUMBER ONE
Plain White T’s own the most successful song in the land with “Hey There Delilah” as it tops the Billboard 100 singles. |
Plain White T’s now own the Number One track in the land with “Hey There Delilah,” which is off their latest album, Every Second Counts. The band only added the song to later pressings of the album because it had been around a long time. |
Tom Higgenson and De’Mar Hammilton said that “Hey There Delilah” was not originally on the new album, since it had been on the previous indie album. |
“Delilah is actually an older song. It was on our last record actually. We were on an independent label, and it kind of had some success on the indie level, the underground level with our fans and stuff. We signed to a major label, Hollywood Records, and we recorded a record just like any other record we would record. Delilah wasn’t… We didn’t put it on there because it was an older song but through time, fans just kept on…Every show we’d play everyone in the crowd would be singing along to that song. That was just a song that really resonated with people. So we decided to put it as a bonus track on our CD, so that’s when it started to go to radio, and it became a hit I guess.” |
Now with a gold album, for sales of 500,000 copies, and a Number One song, have the Plain White T’s gotten used to their popularity? |
“When you actually… Our record went gold last week, and when it did, it was like, ‘Oh, cool!,’ and then they were like, ‘You gotta go do this now.’ You don’t really have time to think about it or enjoy it. I think once in a while I try to step out of it and just take a second and think, ‘Whoa, this is all happening, this is my life, and this is…’ things that I always wanted and now that they’re happening, I’m not really acknowledging it. I’m not even enjoying it. So I think we should try to take more time to just realize what’s happening and how cool everything is.” |
Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah” not only tops the Hot 100 chart, they also own the Number 5 song at Alternative Rock, Number 6 on the CHR Top 40 airplay chart, and Number 3 on the Hot AC chart. The band continues their string of unorthodox tourdates, which include malls, Six Flags Amusement Parks, and other fairs and festivals. |
