Eddie Vedder, singer for the band Pearl Jam, has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for a song from the movie Into The Wild. The song, “Guaranteed,” was written with Kaki King and Michael Brook. The film a story about the solo wilderness travels of Chris McCandless, stars Emile Hirsch, and it was directed by Sean Penn. |
Penn chose Vedder because he thought the singer could relate to McCandless, and Vedder admitted he sees similarities. |
“Yeah, it frightens me how much I understand about Chris, and at first I was disappointed because I thought I had dealt with most of that stuff in a positive way and a lot of it through music and through art.” |
Vedder said the story of a man dying out in the wilderness and shunning all modern technological conveniences deserved special musical treatment. |
“I kind of grabbed everything I had from the house and then even looked into getting some instruments that I had never even laid hands on before like a mandolin or something. There was a motivation to get different sounds than you normally would, so even if I was going to be the one playing the instruments that by changing…maybe the parts would sound similar because it was all the same hands or whatever. I think it was a good idea to keep swapping out instruments and put instruments that I had never played before and in that way it made you play outside yourself or not have it sound like it was coming from the same set of hands.” |
Vedder is up against songs by Shakira, Clint Eastwood, and the writing ensemble in charge of the Dewey Cox movie Walk Hard. Vedder actually penned and released the soundtrack to the movie. Vedder will next lend his music to the documentary “People Speak” which is based on the book A People’s History Of The United States. It will detail issues of race, class, war and women’s rights. |
