Grey’s Anatomy star goes from McDreamy to McMarried in Freedom Writers.

Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey took time off from his grueling television schedule as McDreamy to play Mcmarried with his friend Hilary Swank in Freedom Writers. The two actors had previously worked together on a made for television drama Iron Jawed Angels three years earlier.

Patrick says playing Hilary’s husband felt like second nature to him.

“It was nice to come in and work with her because we had an established relationship already which lends itself to playing husband and wife. She’s fun to work with, she’s amazingly professional. Great strength of character and I always learn a lot from her when I’m working with her. It felt really natural and easy.”

Playing the husband of a driven school teacher whose students become her primary focus was a challenge for Patrick to make the character likable when their marriage inevitably ends.

“I don’t think Scott’s the bad guy. The dynamics in their relationship are very realistic. Certain relationships, they’re not meant to work out. Also they had married so young too that they were still developing as adults. I think at the time they met they were perfect for each other and as the time went on they grew apart and they recognized that. He loved and respected her and I think was very proud of her but he couldn’t be the house husband to her.”

Patrick’s next feature film is Enchanted, an animated fairy tale about a princess looking for her true prince. When the evil queen puts a spell on her the cartoons come to life in modern day Manhattan.
