NO MALE BONDING IN NATURE FOR GABRIEL BYRNE
Gabriel Byrne stars in Jindabyne which tells the story of a group of male best friends who take a camping trip for a little fly fishing to bond with each other and with nature. When they discover a dead woman in the raging river, they don’t report it to the authorities until after they come home from their long weekend. |
Gabriel says he can’t think of anything worse than a male bonding excursion with another famous actor. |
“He tried to get me to join this group of men, only men who would go off to this forest at weekends with these drums and naked they would start beating these drums and try to get in contact with their fathers and tell their fathers what they really thought of them. And what they needed from their fathers and all that stuff. And I just said, ‘you know what I really enjoyed talking to you but I can not think of anything I would rather less do than to be in the middle of a forest with a big bunch of naked men banging drums trying to get in touch with their fathers!” |
And fly fishing does not come naturally for the Irishman. |
“I am not a natural fisherman. I stood on a rock, fell off the rock. I caught a fish. I got such a shock when the fish was caught that the fish ran off with the hook and the experts had to run after the thing and get the rod out of the fish’s mouth. I’m not an outdoorsman unless it involves sun and maybe a book.” |
Jindabyne which also stars Laura Linney opens Friday in theaters. |
