NICOLAS CAGE RIDES WITH THE DEVIL GHOST RIDER
Nicolas Cage is hell on wheels as motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze who transforms into a flaming skeleton by night hunting down rogue demons in Ghost Rider. Johnny makes a deal with the Devil Mephistopheles to protect his childhood sweetheart. |
Based on the Marvel comic book Nicolas sees the unique mythology as a metaphor for heroism. |
“That doesn’t mean in life that we’re going to sell our souls to the devil. But it does mean that in life as human beings we find ourselves working with people or relating to people who do not necessarily have our best interests at heart. So what do you do when you’re in that situation? How do you take the negative and turn it into a positive. He’s an alchemical superhero.” |
Cage describes the film as a western biker movie meets Beauty and The Beast not to mention a spooky and comic ride. He especially enjoyed acting out to special effects with Mark Steven Johnson’s direction. |
“I would laugh a lot at the monitor about the situations we were finding ourselves in because he was so funny when he’d direct me. He’d say, ‘There’s more bugs on your face, they’re chewing off your skin. Scream, scream!’ And I was getting excited. Yes we’re in a monster movie. This is a monster movie and I felt like a kid again.” |
Cage played Ghost Rider almost completely by the book adding his own quirky nuances, Johnny Blaze’s love of jelly beans and The Carpenters’ music which helps to keep the devil away. |
