NEWCOMER MAYA AZUCENA ON RAW SOUL

R&B singer Maya Azucena has been grinding it out for several years. The Brooklyn-based singer released her debut album, Maya Who?, earlier this year. Azucena has also found success as a song writer. The singer’s collaboration with an Italian artist earned her a trip to Europe and a quick spot on MTV Europe’s TRL.

Recently while performing at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, Azucena broke down her sound. She said,

“I like to describe my sound, I call it raw soul and to me now a days soul sometimes gets this feeling. You get the impression when you hear the name soul or neo-soul, like it kind of reminds you of sleepy music. Music that’s like it great background music, but you never remember the hook. You know it just good music to have…. To me raw soul has a hip hop funk element, live element just like jumping out at you. Just has that live energy, you know what I’m sayin’, so my sound is raw soul.”
