Nas, LL Cool J, T.I., Jim Jones, Boy Wonder, Papoose, Jinx Da Juvy, Maino, Kerry Brothers, Tony Touch, Ed Lover, Marley Marl, M1, U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, Russell Simmons, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, and Kevin Liles were some of the celebrities who participated in the Hip Hop Summit’s “Get Your Money Right” Financial Empowerment workshop on Saturday, April 22nd. The event was held at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City and sponsored by Chrysler Financial. |
The workshop focused on accumulating wealth by focusing on the pros and cons of credit, home ownership, entrepreneurship, improving your FICA score, and calculating net worth. |
“I mean we’re able to go out there and make the records and stuff and tour and make the money. So at some point you got to be able to come back and give back, you know? At some point, you got to show like it’s more than just rapping on stage. You know it’s about being a man, being you know responsible.” |
Backstage, Nas shared what he hopes the Summit’s participants will get out of the day’s event. He said, |
“Freedom, freedom, that’s what it’s about. Stay focused, stay focused cause for real they try put other things in front of our real dreams. My name is M1 from Dead Prez ya’ll. I want ya’ll to know that. That means dead the system that don’t represent us. That’s what Dead Prez means. It means we need to create self government. We need to be self determintive black and brown people. We need black and brown unity, Black and Brown people. Yeah let’s put it together. Let’s put my collard greens besides your rice and beans, for sure.” |
During the event, Dead Prez’s M1 stressed the importance of African American and Latino unity. He said, |
The Get Your Money Right workshop is slated to hit Miami next month, Atlanta and Los Angeles in September, and Dallas in October. |
