MASON JENNINGS DISCOVERING HIS INNER WORLD IN THE EVER
Singer songwriter Mason Jennings talks about songwriting and discovering his inner self on his Brushfire Records debut album “In the Ever.” |
Singer songwriter Mason Jennings certainly knows a lot about crafting original songs. After releasing five albums and performing countless shows across North America, Jennings was signed to Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records and released his latest album “In the Ever” shortly thereafter. After meeting Jack Johnson at a festival the two were performing at, they immediately hit it off after noticing a similar style in songwriting and soon after that, Jennings was opening shows for Jack Johnson as he sky rocketed to popularity. For his latest album “In the Ever,” Mason recorded it by himself at his rustic studio in the forest in Minnesota and it was there that he was free of distractions and other interruptions most musicians would experience recording in the big city. |
Artisan News caught up with Mason Jennings to get his thoughts on discovering his inner world during the recording of “In the Ever.” |
“In Minnesota, I got a place out in the woods there and I recorded it by myself on a laptop just out in the middle of trees and there’s a lake out back and just kept it really rustic. It definitely calms you down. It calms me down and it just feels like you can touch base with more of an ancient feeling and then you also can hear more of your own voice instead of other people’s voices. When you’re in the city you hear a lot of, there’s a lot of energy and thought for whats around you and when you’re out there in the woods it’s a way that you can really just hone in on your own inner world.” |
Mason Jennings even elaborated on why he likes to record albums by himself, far away from other distractions and influences. |
“I think it can be fun both ways, but I grew up making recordings myself so I’m use to doing the drums first. Drums are my first instrument so for me it’s been like, it’s really fun to be by your self and to create a song or a recording that nobody’s ever heard. It just feels a lot more like being an author or a painter I guess. It works for me.” |
Mason Jennings will be taking some time off the road to be with his friends and family for the holidays. As of press time Jennings only has a handful of tour dates booked for 2009, but there is one very important benefit show on Jan 17th. The show is a benefit for Brushfire family member Chad Weis, who recently had a successful surgery to remove a rare fungal mass in his sinuses. All proceeds will go to a foundation Myles Kennedy, started to help musicians without insurance. The foundation will put all the night’s proceeds towards paying down Chad’s enormous medical bills. The Benefit show will take place at First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 17. Look for Mason Jennings to announce a more extensive run of tour dates in 2009. |
