Mariah Carey took home six BMI Awards including Songwriter of the Year and Song Of The Year for “We Belong Together” at the BMI annual Urban Awards which were held in New York City on Wednesday, August 30th. Kanye West won producer of the year for the second year in a row. LA Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds were awarded the prestigious BMI Icon Awards for their “enduring influence on generations of music-makers”. The two men founded LAFace Records in the early ’90s and signed OutKast, Toni Braxton, Pink, TLC, Usher, and others. |
Jazze Pha, Slim Thug, Lil Jon, The Game and Sean Garrett were also honored at the event which featured performances by Gnarls Barkley and Yung Joc. |
“I would like to say something. I appreciate the pink stage. That’s hot tamalie. No seriously I wish I could have been here to accept in ’92 and ’98. And I can’t even, whatever…I wasn’t around. You know I wasn’t hanging out back then. But anyway I’m very, very, very thankful and so honored tonight. I have to thank, J.D. I know you’re not BMI you but we love you Jermaine. Thank you so much. I have to thank Mr. LA Reid.” |
Carey shared how touched she was during her acceptance speech. The singer failed to attend the ceremony twice in the 90s when she was also a big winner. She said, |
Carey is currently on tour and last month Prince Azim, the son of the Sultan of Brunei, presented the singer with an eight carat diamond and platinum necklace at her New York concert stop. The necklace, which is worth more than $4 million, is the latest overture from the Prince who has fallen for Carey. |
