KEVIN COSTNER REINVENTS HIMSELF

It’s no more Mr. Nice guy for Kevin Costner who plays a serial killer in Mr. Brooks.

It’s no more Mr. Nice guy for movie star Kevin Costner. Kevin stars as Mr. Brooks who is seemingly a regular dad but we quickly find out he is a monster who has an addiction to murder.

The 52 year-old who has been acting for 24 years was always afraid of serial killer movies but says his passion for creating a classic led him to the dark side for the role of Mr. Brooks.

“I don’t myself like serial killer movies. I don’t like haunted movies. They make me uncomfortable. If you will I get afraid. But if I read something that I think has a chance to be classic in a genre that I normally wouldn’t go into then I know it’s right and so I don’t question that. I don’t back away from what I think is good because the timing’s wrong or ooh, I wonder about my image.”

Kevin might’ve hit his stride with this role as the timing was perfect but he says getting older never factored into his ability to play evil.

“This sounds vain but I haven’t really lacked for confidence as I’ve rolled through my career. I really started to act when I was about 28 or at least be recognized for acting so I always had my own ideas formed. But they’re not so much about myself as they are about cinema itself. I really believe in the two hours in the dark or in my instance three hours. I like long movies obviously. I believe so much of that, that when I see a movie that I want to make it doesn’t matter that it’s two baseball movies in a row. It doesn’t matter if it’s a political thriller. I’ve tried to jump in genre. I’ve tried to travel in time. I love the American western.”

Kevin vows to make another Western but his next genre is comedy with Swing Vote about how one man can make a difference in the presidential election. Kevin believes in the power of movies so much he’s mortgaged his property in Aspen, Colorado to finance another comedy he describes as Capraesque. Mr. Brooks is currently playing in theaters.
