JASON REEVES ON HAVING COLBIE CAILLAT AS ASONGWRITING PARTNER AND FRIEND
Jason Reeves talks about learning from the great songwriters he has worked with in a short amount of time, including Colbie Caillat |
Jason Reeves had a major decision to make when he was just starting out as a singer songwriter growing up in Iowa. Getting a lucky break to record his first demo in Los Angeles with producer Mikal Blue who introduced Jason to another up and coming songwriter, Colbie Caillat. Together, they would become instant friends and they helped write the songs on Caillat’s hit album “Coco,” which Blue also produced. |
We caught up with Jason to get his thoughts on having Colbie as his first friend in Los Angeles and if he ever planned on having so much success writing together on “Coco.” |
“Fortunately she was really the first friend I made out here and she was one of the first people I really met, all through Mikal really and his manager. She’d been singing with him a little bit. Really we just got together one night while I was in the middle of recording I started writing songs and it turned into what happened without ever making those plans. We didn’t plan it.” |
It was only a matter of time before Jason was given the opportunity to record his debut album, ‘The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache and other Frightening Tales’ and before major record labels took notice of his talent. Jason also talked about learning so much, so fast from a lot of great people he’s met along the way. |
“Yeah, through all of it, I guess it’s through just doing it for years and especially writing with other people. I’ve gotten to write with so many great people and you learn so much so fast even if you don’t realize it at the time, it comes out later. I guess it’s just the fact that I’ve been writing so much more recently than I ever had before. It’s been so distracting.” |
Initially it was Jason’s first demo EP that brought him out to Los Angeles, but he never imagined he wouldn’t be able to leave and return to Iowa. |
“Speaking of the EP, I came out here from Iowa in 2005, I think about three years ago, to record that. I was going to be here for a week then go back to Iowa and keep doing all that but when I got out here I realized I couldn’t leave sanely. I had to stay here.” |
