Jack Johnson brought together a stunning list of friends for his third annual Kokua Festival. The Kokua Festival, which was held in Maui and Oahu, brought together environmental organizations, eco-friendly businesses, musicians, artists, teachers, and community leaders to promote environmental awareness in Hawaii. All proceeds from the event go to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, which is a non-profit organization supporting environmental education programs in Hawaii and was founded by Jack Johnson and his wife, Kim. |
This years event featured sets from Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson and the Planetary Bandits, an acoustic set from Ben Harper and Innocent Criminal Michael Ward, Henry Kapono, Paula Fuga and the One Love ‘Ohana Band, and ALO and a very special surprise appearance by Damian Marley, who was also on the island with his own band. Marley, Johnson and the band then delivered a version of Marley’s ‘Welcome to Jamrock.’ |
“Kokua means help in the Hawaiian language and so Kokua Hawaii Foundation is basically a group, my wife and I and a group of friends, we all started up. It’s basically to help start recycling in elementary schools and send kids on field trips. Just trying to raise money for elementary schools and mix in music and environmental education. It’s fun, I end up playing a lot of the elementary schools with the foundation. We go around and start up these recycling programs and kind of for the kick off I come play this song. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle that I kind of put together from an old Schoolhouse Rock song, called three is the magic number.” |
We caught up with Jack Johnson to talk about the Kokua Festival and after all these years if he had any special memories. |
“Yeah backstage especially, because that’s always the funnest part because you get up in front of the crowd and you’re with someone who you really admire and you really can’t help but make sure you’re hitting the right chords. But when you’re back in the room and just learning a song, like with Jackson Browne or Ben or someone like that. It’s always a special moment to get to sit down with someone who has inspired you so much and play music together.” |
Look for Jack Johnson to take an extended break after coming off two immensely successful albums, ‘In between Dreams’ and his soundtrack for ‘Curious George’ which was the number one selling album in the US earlier in the year. |
