ICE T BREAKS DOWN THE ORIGINS OF GANGTSA RAP
Rapper and actor Ice T continues to release new albums and DVD while keeping his day job as one of the stars of Law & Order:SVU. Ice T was born in New Jersey but he moved to Los Angeles at the age of 11 after lossing both of his parents. He attended Crenshaw High School and became affiliated with the Crips gang. Soon he was making tons of money as a pimp but he decided to try his hand at rapping. Little did he know he would create a new form of rap called gangsta rap. |
Ice T explained how it all went down. He said, |
“We would ride around to L.A. clubs and my boys would be like, ‘Let him rap.’ They would be like, ‘No, no rapping.’ So we would give them $500 and next thing you know I had the mic. I’m sitting on there all night on the mic. But now what am I going to rap about. I’m rolling with a bunch of hoods, you know, so they like, ‘Rap about us.’ Next thing you know I’m talking, I’m rhyming about my crew. Next thing you know, I’m saying, ‘ Yo look at us. We just came we parked on the sidewalk. You know who this is. Whoopty, whoopty, whoop.’ And little did I know I was inventing a style of rap which basically ended up being called gangsta rap which was an apolitical rhyme that basically said, ‘This is my world. I’m running it and you have to deal with it.” |
In related news, Ice T recently entered into an agreement with Rodedawg International Industries to promote the company’s new onroad/offroad vehicle. The new Chinese military vehicle has the ability to take to the water unlike most of today’s standard off-road vehicles like Hummers and Jeeps. |
