The Marijuana Policy Project honored Hue Hefner for being a pioneer in the fight for the legalization of medicianl marijuana and Michelle Phillips, Snoop, The Dust Brothers, Ray Benson, Adam Carolla and Tommy Chong all celebrated in grand style at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. Also cause to celebrate was a recent victory in Rhode Island legalizing medicinal marijuana and an upcoming vote in Nevada which will be the first state to have on the ballot not just legalizing medicinal marijuana, but also regulating and taxing it. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame vocalist Michelle Phillips of the Mama’s and the Papa’s stoped by to talk about her views on legalization just before Hue was honored. |
We also caught up with the legendary Tommy Chong, who is in the midst of fighting his own battle with the US Government in regards to his handmade glass company Chong Glass. Chong shared his views on Hue being a pioneer in the fight for legalization and decriminaliztion. |
“I think that hemp should be legalized and I believe that marijuana should be legalized. In fact, not just for medical marijuana but i believe marijuana should be legalized universally. It’s a gift from god.” |
Also on hand was was up and coming artist Rocco Delluca and the Burden who performed a musical set along with Multi Grammy Award winner Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel. Mike Simpson of the Dust Brothers, who produced albums for Beck and The Beastie Boys was also on hand to lend support for the cause as many of the attendees danced the night away and partied in the grotto and Hef’s private backyard zoo. With most of America’s funds going to fight an unnecessary war and the policing of Iraq, it only seems logical and beneficial for society to not only legalize medicinal marijuana, but also tax and regulate it just like alcohol. With the billions in revenue that would surely come with legalization and regulation, we must continue to fight the fight one state at a time. This truely could be a solution to many of our countries financial issues the Bush Administration has caused. The Marijuana Policy Project is the largest and fastest growing marijuana policy reform organization in the US and currently sitting on MPP’s Advisory Board is Jack Black, Ani DiFranco, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Ozomatli, Micheele Phillips, Jesse Ventura and Bill Maher. “Back in the 1970’s we thought we were going to have marijuana laws decriminalized. We thought it was going to be over. I don’t know what happened in between. With many matters of social progress it’s two steps forward and one step back. I think to me it’s very much like prohibition. The laws are much more hurtful than the things they are intended to surpress. And when you get to the subject of medical marijuana I think the legal attitudes are bizarre.” |
“You know Hef was the daddy of us all. Hef was talking about pot before I smoked it. I was thirteen years old when I read my first Playboy magazine so it’s just fitting that the god father of weed is right here. On a grassroots level we can vote George Bush out of office for one thing. We definitely have to do that. You know, do what we’re doing. The wheel of legalization is sort of slowly moving and creeping ahead. It’s like gay marriages in Boston.” |
