HEDLEY SINGER PUNKS OUT CANADIAN IDOL

rnHedley’s self-titled debut album isn’t set for release for another two months, but vocalist Jacob Hoggard gives the band an instant name — at least up in Canada. Hoggard was a finalist for Canadian Idol, and he entered the contest as a goof from his bandmates. When the rocker actually became one of the finalists, he decided enough was enough and quit the contest.

We asked Hoggard, with gutiarist Dave Rosin next to him, if he thinks he would have won the competition had he not withdrawn.

[Hoggard] “No. I don’t think so. I can’t say ‘Yeah.'” [Rosin] “I think the difference from when Jake was doing it and between everybody else is that Jake took it with a grain of salt, and the big thing was it was like, ‘Hey who wouldn’t want to be on TV for the summer?’ And untll then Jake was doing construction and you come home at night, go hang out wiht your friends at night and drink beer, and instead you get to be on national TV. and at some point everybody’s got to entertain that idea. I think that would be pretty cool. It’s all about the level you take it to.”

Rosin and Hoggard added that Jake brought some personality to Canadian Idol, and said the vocalist wasn’t ashamed to make a spectacle of himself.

[Rosin] “The difference between when Jake was on the show is he performed instead of just singing a song. He made it into a spectacle, which is what Jake’s always been about.” [Hoggard] “I am a spectacle…just being a retard like walking on stage with food in my mouth and eating food when I was supposed to be talking and just f–king around. I think people thought it was funny, but I don’t think that would have been able to compete with that cute baby-faced boy that would normally win the shows.”

Hedley’s debut album will be released September 12, and for the record Hoggard was in the top three before bowing out.
