The Ronettes, Van Halen, R.E.M., and Patti Smith will also be inducted as part of the class of 2007 on March 12th at the annual ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. |
Grandmaster Flash explained how his father inspired him to deejay. He said, |
“My father was a serious collector of vinyl records and I can remember almost like it was yesterday. There was a rule in my household. Never go in that closet and touch those records. Never go in there, don;t go in dad’s record. My father used to work for the railroads, building the tracks and stuff. I’d watch him put his clothing on and his backpack and stuff. As soon as I heard the door slam. I would go in the kitchen and grab a chair. Drag it over to the closet, sort of climb up on that chair, turn that knob, and wow!!! Look at all those records.” |
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five is comprised of Flash, Melle Mel, Raheim, Kidd Creole, Scorpio, and the late Cowboy. The group’s early ’80s hits include “The Message,” “White Lines,” “Freedom,” and “Superappin’.” |
