GERARD BUTLER IS BEOWULF

Phantom of the Opera star Gerard Butler steps out from behind the mask in Beowulf and Grendel. Based on an epic poem Gerard’s Beowulf is a medieval Norse warrior who leads his troops to save a village from the blood-thirsty monster, Grendel. The Scottish hunk explains why Beowulf is on a killing spree.

Butler’s Beowulf is on a mission to slay the beast in allegiance to the Lord of the Danes and says he will do whatever it takes to accomplish the task at hand.

“He loves the quest but he kind of hates it as well because he sees that killing is a necessary evil but it’s something he’s done a lot of. He is sad that he made many people suffer and I think he will in that moment do it with a viciousness but there’s a couple of really interesting lines in the beginning of the movie that say so much about the Beowulf that we’re showing, that we’re interpreting. When he’s speaking with the bandits and says, ‘this is my life, a bloody madness.’ In a way he sees the folly of it all.”

Next Gerard will star in the thriller Therese Raquin, a murderous love triangle currently in production.

“There’s a part of him that is crazy, that is violent, that enjoys the idea of taking on a foe and it’s the issue of strength and violence and whoever will win will win and whoever doesn’t will be cut to pieces and crushed. Perhaps in a way even a boastfulness when I’m speaking to the Danes, one to put them at rest but also to say we’re here to help you guys.”
