FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE MEETS BARRYMORE AND POP!
Adam Schlessinger, one half of the creative team that propels the band Fountans Of Wayne, was integral to the creation and implementation of the music for the film Music And Lyrics. The film centers around Hugh Grant as a washed-up ’80s superstar as part of the band, Pop!, who gets a chance at a comeback. |
Schlessinger was the writer and producer of the music, and he said that he’s proud to be so involved in a movie where music is central to the story. |
“This is a great opportunity for me as a songwriter, and there’s not that many films where songs are that central to them, and so it’s fun to be involved in a movie like that. A lot of times people play songs in the film after the fact as part of the score or just in the background. To really have to think about it as far as being a part of the story is a big challenge, and it’s fun.” |
Schlessinger also talked about working with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore who lent their own voices to the music in the film and on the soundtrack. |
“I recorded and produced the songs with them and got to work with Hugh and Drew in the studio, which was a lot of fun. They were both kind of nervous. Obviously they’ve been in front of a camera so much, but in a recording studio it was a little bit new for everybody.” |
Music And Lyrics debuted at Number 4 with a box office total of 14 million dollars. Schlessinger has already been nominated for an Academy Award for his title song for the Tom Hanks film, “That Thing You Do,” back in 1996. |
