FLOBOTS FANS FLIP OVER HANDLEBARS
Flobots have caught the ear of the Alternative and Pop public with their hit ‘Handlebars,’ but it wasn’t what you’d think. |
Flobots have come a long way from being an independent band out of the Denver, Colorado scene. The rap-rock outfit has caught the airwaves and people’s imaginations with the song “Handlebars,” which is charting on radio charts in Alternative and Top 40 radio. |
Jonny 5 and Jesse Walker took time out to chat about the inspiration behind their catchy “Handlebars.” |
“The inspiration behind that song really goes back to 2005. I was actually working as a busboy and I was riding my bike home, and I had just learned to actually ride my bike with no handlebars. A friend of mine had said, ‘Look man, why don’t you try it.’ I said, ‘I can’t even do it. I can’t even do it with one hand.’ He said, ‘You’ve got to put the weight and it just had this feeling like, ‘This is incredible that here I am and this simple, small accomplishment gives me such incredible joy in this moment. And at the same time this was set against the backdrop of the war in Iraq, and just knowing that all these young, talented, brave, noble people were sent over there to do things that were incredibly destructive. Without any disrespect for people who had signed up for this, the political powers had made this decision that is affecting so many lives on both sides of the continent.” |
Jonny 5 added: |
“The two things struck me at once and ‘Handlebars’ was the result. This childhood innocence that then crescendos into this really sinister kind of ultimate human evil dictator figure in the end. And just realizing that any single one of us has the potential to become that powerful a force for destruction or for creation.” |
Flobots released their new album, Fight With Tools, a few months ago, and the independently created album has returned back inside the Top 50 albums of the Billboard 200. It sits at Number 44.rn |
