FAB 5 FREDDY BREAKS DOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF YO MTV RAPS

Video director and graffiti artist Fab 5 Freddy was one of the first people to link New York City’s downtown disco and art scene with the uptown world of hip hop in the 1980s. Later Fab 5 Freddy would become the first host of YO MTV Raps, one of the first video shows geared towards rap music. The show aired on MTV from 1988 to 1994.

Recently Freddy broke down how the show impacted hip hop globally. He said,

“I guess Yo MTV Raps was another interesing opportunity that I got to be the first host of an internationally broadcast show which for a lot of people around the world as hip hop is now a global culture. Many of those people from Brazil to Asia to everywhere in Europe trace the beginnings from them visually to seeing Yo MTV Raps and getting to see the faces of the artists.”
