EX-PURPLE, SABBATH, QUIET RIOT, MAKE BIG NOIZE
Joe Lynn Turner, Carlos Cavazzo, Vinny Appice, and Phil Soussa, have formed Big Noize, and they cover most of the classic hard rock genre. |
Big Noize is an all-star band comprised of Classic Hard rockers guitarist Carlos Cavazzo, vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, bassist Phil Soussan (Sue-Sahn), and drummer Vinny Appice (A-puh-chee). These names may be familiar. Cavazzo is from Quiet Riot, Lynn Turner is from Rainbow and Deep Purple, Soussan is from Ozzy’s Band and played with Jimmy Page, and Vinny Appice is from Black Sabbath, Dio and Rick Derringer. |
The band is currently on the road doing covers from all the band’s they’ve helped to stardom, and vocalist Joe Lynn Turner has a unique take on what they’re doing. |
“People ask us, who are we? What do we do? Are you a tribute band? Well if we are we’re a tribute to ourselves. Are you a Cover Band? Well we do our own songs, so I guess we cover ourselves. I like to think of it as The Originals doing the originals, so Big Noize. And the name actually came from Vinny, who you can probably hear in the background doing a soundcheck, he said, ‘Yeah, we’ll get a manager and we’ll get an agency and we’ll go out and make a big noise.’ And I went, ‘There’s your name,’ and he went, ‘What?’ And I said, ‘Big Noise’ and he went, ‘Great.’ And we stuck with the n o i z e. We were referring to the Queen song anyway with ‘We Will Rock You,’ ‘buddy make a big noise.'” |
Cavazzo, who took the place of Randy Rhoads in Quiet Riot, talked about stepping into the shoes of some of rock’s great guitarist like Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, and Jake E. Lee among others. |
“Oh, I think about that a lot. I could never match what Blackmore did. I wouldn’t even try to. He’s my idol. I love the guy. I just do my own interpretation of what he did. I think we’re all doing that to everybody’s respective parts. We’re not trying to copy it exactly. All the best parts we’ll do that we have to hear and then we’ll do our own interpretation on top of that.” |
Soussan and Appice talk about how Big Noize got together. |
[Appice] “Actually it is my fault. It started out with a band called the Hollywood Allstars. It was an all star band, and myself and Carlos Cavazzo, in the band and Jimmy Bain from Dio who is my old bass player mate, and we were asked to play a benefit for the Great White fire victims, when that thing happened four or five years ago. So that’s how that got started. I kept seeing Joe — I knew Joe for a long time — I kept seeing him at NAMM show and seeing him in LA, and I said, ‘Joe we should do something and kick it up a step and a couple of notches,’ and he was interested in doing it.” [Soussan] “We have a mutual friend by the name of Brent Ware, and he’s based out of Nashville, and he’s a big fan of all of this music. And it was his suggestion that he be instrumental in helping us put something like this together. He’s not involved in the music industry. He’s just a good all-around guy, and then Vinny was the first person who called |
