Singer and actress Elisabeth Withers has enjoyed some success as a Broadway star and now she’s poised to launch a recording career. Withers, who plays the role of Shug Avery in Oprah Winfrey’s Broadway production of The Color Purple, will release her debut album, It Can Happen To Anyone, next month. The first single from the project is “Be With You.” |
The Tony Award-nominated star recently shared how a chance meeting with Paul McCartney lead to her singing at the Beatles’ June 2002 wedding. Withers said, |
“I remember performing at the Hudson Hotel. And I was just doing what I did. I did what I love to do which is to perform wearing what I wanted to wear, singing what I wanted to sing. And I remember seeing this guy, I didn’t know really who he was because it was so many people. It was right after 9/11 for Save New York. And I remember seeing this guy and he wanted to come up on stage. And I thought, ‘Sure yeah come up on stage.’ So he comes up on stage, next thing I know Robin Williams is on stage, all these different people and we’re dancing and singing. And he looks and he goes, ‘You gonna sing at my wedding.’ I thought great, okay go back…..that’s Paul McCartney, you know! And a couple of months later we got the call. It was all hush, hush, hush, hush, hush.” |
