DONOVAN RELEASES SUNSHINE SUPERMAN FILM AND DVD

Legendary singer and songwriter Donovan has released his film and DVD combo titled Sunshine Superman – The Journey Of Donovan.

Legendary singer/songwriter Donovan has released a combination film and DVD titled Sunshine Superman: The Journey Of Donovan. Sunshine Superman is currently in stores and covers both his personal journey and his musical legacy’s effect on the times. Donovan was at one time considered an equal of Bob Dylan, and penned the hits “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” “Mellow Yellow,” and “Sunshine Superman.”

We asked Donovan how the project came about.

“So the beginning of the project, my DVD, it came soon after I was completing my autobiography, my book that came out in 2005. I was in Vienna doing a gig, in Austria, and I met a director, Hannes Rosacher. Now this director is quite famous. He’s pretty good, too, award winning, and he was a new friend. He said, ‘In completing the book will you be doing a documentary, Don?’ I said, ‘I’d like to.’ And he came to Ireland and looked in the basement and he found in the basement an enormous amount of footage that nobody had ever seen on me that I’d kept, somehow over the years, safe and then the project began. Much more than a portrait of an artist it seems, but more like a portrait of the times. I started doing the interviews and talking about the rise of consciousness. The awareness, the folk music invading the popular culture with a flood of ideas that people hadn’t heard of for a long time. So, it became fascinating to make the film not

Sunshine Superman has also been shown at various film festivals, and Donovan shared with us what the impressions of the festivals were.

“What I’m looking at now is people’s reactions to it, not my reactions, but their reactions. It’s now been shown in the Berlin Planetarium in Germany, the Everyman Theater in London, and the Woodstock film festival in the last few days. So far the words in are that it’s a page turner, and they couldn’t stop watching. This is very important. Also people of my generation have been reminded of commitments that they’ve made that they’ve been slack on. That’s a good reaction too. And of course the young musicans will learn quite a lot from the origins of my influences, which can be passed on to the young musicians. This is a very good thing I’m hearing about the film, so far anyway. I don’t know about America as a whole because it’s just arrived in the stores right now (laughs).”

Along with the film, the DVD contains unreleased songs, extended versions, TV appearances and Music videos among other treats.
