DERYCK WHIBLEY DISCUSSES PRODUCING SUM 41 ALBUM AND FOR WIFE AVRIL
Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley doesn’t see much change in his roll as Sum 41’s producer and he talks about producing songs for his wife, Avril Lavigne. |
After Sum 41’s previous album ‘Chuck’ peaked at #10 on the U.S. Billboard Chart, the band made a few changes in the way they record, most notably Deryck Whibley, Sum 41’s lead vocalist and guitarist took on the job as producer. With their latest release Whibley felt he could get the most out of the band and decided to try his hand at producing and with ‘Underclass Hero’ the band has their best chart position of their career, peaking at #7 on The U.S. Billboard Chart. Being from Canada, Sum 41’s last 4 albums have peaked at #1 on Canada’s album charts as well as being certified multiple platinum. |
We caught up with Deryck on tour recently to find out if his role changed in the band being the producer and lead vocalist. |
“I don’t think it made much of a difference for me personally because I spent so much time writing songs already and everything was already finished before we were going into the studio. It didn’t feel like there was any kind of different role to play.” |
Whibley even has produced a few songs for his wife as well, which just happens to be fellow Canadian star, Avril Lavigne. So has he written any songs with his wife yet? |
“I actually haven’t written any songs with her but I produced two songs on her last record. That was really easy too because we were already in the studio with Sum 41 and we went in quickly and just did these two songs.” |
Sum 41 will kick off another round of touring in support of ‘Underclass Hero’ with dates beginning November 17th in Jacksonville, Florida and extending until December 4th in Norfolk, Virginia. After taking some time off for the holidays, look for Sum 41 to get back out on the road. |
