Garbage’s Shirley Manson was the right person to induct Blondie into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame earlier this week in New York City. Manson not only is the defining front-woman of her time, she also had some very real and personal contact with Blondie singer Debbie Harry early in her career. |
Manson said that Harry’s support of her career and other women-fronted bands was one of the reasons why she thinks Blondie and Harry are truly deserving of the honor. |
“It’s difficult really to explain, but aside from the records I actually toured with Blondie in the eighties with my very first band and then went on and enjoyed support from Debbie. Debbie would come to my shows and would be in the first row in the mosh pit. She was just really generous and really was a great inspiration and support. I love her. I think she’s one of the few celebrities out there who actually has an incredible amount of integrity and grace. She’s unparalleled.” |
She also talked about what kind of impact Blondie had on her band, Garbage. |
“A massive impact, aside from the fact that Clem Burke is one of my drummer’s favorite drummers of all time and that Debbie is one of my favorite front-women and singers of all time. I think they really us to believe that music doesn’t have to be genre specific, that you can mix and match and be really ambitious with what you pull on. You can have a really broad view of how music can be, and I think that’s where they really played a large part in my own bands.” |
Blondie is set to embark on a summer tour, and Manson is working on a solo album, which should be ready for release later this year. |
