Mississippi-based rapper David Banner was recently honored with an award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislature (NBCSL). Banner was presented with the organization’s Visionary Award at a ceremony on Wednesday (November 29) in Jackson, MS for his contributions and efforts in helping to raise millions of dollars in relief funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The rapper was received by a standing ovation from the more than 200 high school students who attended the event. |
The National Black Caucus and its branch in the state of Mississippi made it clear that they do not endorse the rapper’s lyrics or music, they did applaud his charitable efforts. During his acceptance speech, Banner made it clear that he did not plan to apologize for his lyrics or music anymore. |
“I’m not as emotional about music as I used to be. You know God has definitely blessed me to know what people in the streets want. And you know I used to be into trying to change music and you know trying to write a score and I’m doing rap music. Now I know exactly what the people want out of music and I’mma give the streets what they want.” |
Prior to the event, Banner explained that he’s changed his entire musical outlook. The rapper said, |

In related news, Banner will make his big screen debut in the upcoming movie, Black Snake Moan. The film also stars Samuel Jackson, Justine Timberlake, and Christina Ricci. |
